First Visit

What to Expect on Your First Visit

Welcome and thanks for choosing Injury Pain MD for treatment of your chronic pain.
This page will help make your first appointment at Injury Pain MD Center a successful, stress-free experience.

Our expectations before your appointment:

  1. Insurance - Make sure that we have your current insurance information and a referral, if required by your insurance, before the day of your appointment.
If you are an injury patient (injured at work and/or auto accident) please provide all your detailed information to the staff before your appointment to expedite the process.
  2. Primary Care Provider - Make sure that you have a primary care provider. We are part of your health care team and want you to have the best possible interactive care with your primary care physician.
  3. Information we need - Arrive 15 to 30 minutes before your appointment to fill out your new patient packet, which includes a patient questionnaire, HIPAA acknowledgement, medical release and registration forms. We realize that we request a lot of information from you; however, it is necessary to provide the best quality care that you deserve.
  4. Medication information - It is important to include information about all medications with their strength and dosage. Please include regularly prescribed medications, those you take on an “as needed” basis, over the counter medications and preparations, vitamins, herbals, Chinese, homeopathic, medicated creams, ointments, eye drops, etc., as they may need to be stopped before your injection or they might interact with medicines prescribed from the pain clinic.
  5. Provide copies of all pertinent lab and imaging reports. If these were done by someone other than your referring provider, you may need to request them from the ordering provider prior to your appointment.

On the day of your appointment:

  1. The first visit is usually a consultation. Dr. Madnani will take your history, examine you and then devise a treatment plan with you.
  2. Bring all your medications in their original containers, and their most recently prescribed bottles.
  3. Arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment. This allows time for you to complete the paperwork process with our office staff and update your current information.
  4. We encourage you to bring a family member or friend with you as a health advocate. It may be helpful to you to have an extra set of eyes and ears, someone to write down issues discussed with the doctor, as well as a comforting presence to lessen any anxiety you may have in coming to meet with new health care providers.

During the rest of your consultation:

  1. Your weight and vital signs will be taken.
  2. You will have questionnaires to complete. These give us tools to plan your optimal care.
  3. An assistant will ask questions to clarify or expand the information you provided in the packet. For example, “What kind of reaction did you have to this medication?”
  4. Dr. Madnani will ask more questions, get more details on your history, listen to your goals and perform a physical exam. The Drs. Madnani like to spend time talking with and educating their patients about their pain, as they believe that education plays a very important role in any kind of medical treatment.
  5. Dr. Madnani may order additional tests, such as blood tests, special imaging and other diagnostics if indicated to provide an accurate diagnosis and ensure your safety.
  6. Most often we do not prescribe medications at the first visit. We do have strict narcotic prescribing policies. No narcotics can be prescribed until all the previous records and appropriate test results are obtained. You also may not need medications prescribed or it may not be safe to prescribe medications for you. Alternative options will be discussed with you at the time of your visit.
  7. Our staff is very experienced and helpful in getting precerts for your diagnostic imaging (MRI scans, CT scans, etc.) and will help you in making appointments.

Referrals and return visits:

The first visit is usually a consultation and then a treatment plan is devised including appropriate injections for which you will be scheduled as soon as possible depending on the kind of medications you are taking and the time needed for getting preauthorization for that particular injection. We will work with you to develop a comprehensive pain management program, which you can discuss with your primary doctor.

Patients are referred to us for many reasons and with different insurances.

It is your responsibility to make sure you stay up to date with your referral.
